Portland Cyclists Ask Drivers to Acknowledge Bike Lanes Exist

PORTLAND, OR — A coalition of local cyclists held a press conference this week politely asking drivers to acknowledge that the city’s bike lanes exist in physical reality and are not merely decorative street art.

Standing beside a freshly painted lane on a busy east-side street, the group explained that the lanes — clearly marked with bright lines and large bicycle symbols — are intended to be used by bicycles rather than parked cars, delivery vans, or drivers briefly “checking something on their phone.”

Transportation officials say the markings are visible under most lighting conditions, including daylight, cloudy daylight, brighter cloudy daylight, and the uniquely gray daylight Portland specializes in.

“We Even Drew a Bicycle”

Cyclists say they believed the painted bicycle symbols might help clarify the lane’s purpose.

“We made the picture pretty big,” said one rider pointing to the pavement. “It’s a bicycle. That’s a clue.”

Despite this effort, many cyclists report the lane is frequently occupied by vehicles performing what drivers describe as “very quick stops that somehow last twenty minutes.”

Drivers Remain Unsure

Several drivers interviewed said they were unaware the painted space had a specific function.

“I assumed it was like a suggestion,” said one driver who had parked partially inside the lane while ordering takeout.

Another motorist admitted they thought the bicycle icon was “a motivational message.”

“Like, maybe the city just wants us to think about bikes,” the driver explained.

Transportation Officials Respond

City transportation officials say they are confident the lane markings are sufficiently clear.

“We used bright paint, straight lines, and a literal picture of a bicycle,” a spokesperson said. “From an infrastructure standpoint, we’re not sure what additional hints we could provide.”

Officials confirmed that the paint is designed to remain visible even during Portland’s famous rainstorms, though they acknowledged that visibility may drop slightly when a vehicle is parked directly on top of it.

Cyclists Propose New Awareness Campaign

In response, cyclists have proposed several new strategies to help drivers notice the lanes.

Ideas include:

  • Painting even larger bicycles
  • Adding arrows pointing directly at the word “BIKE”
  • Installing a small person next to the lane quietly repeating “this is for bikes”

One cyclist suggested a more dramatic solution.

“What if the lane occasionally moved?” they asked. “Just to keep drivers alert.”

Shared Confusion Continues

Despite the debate, both cyclists and drivers say they ultimately want the same thing: a safe and predictable system for navigating city streets.

Until then, riders say they will continue using the lanes whenever they are not temporarily functioning as parking spots, loading zones, or philosophical gray areas.

At press time, one cyclist was reportedly seen slowing down behind a parked car while whispering calmly:

“Look at the paint. Just look at the paint.”
